Read text from a scanned PDF
A scanned PDF is made of pictures of pages, so you cannot select, copy or search its words. This tool reads every page with OCR and gives you the text, page by page, ready to copy or download as a .txt file. Use it for scanned books, old certificates, court papers, notices and forms.
Languages
Choose English, Hindi, or English and Hindi together. The combined option suits most Indian documents. Choosing only the language that is in the file is a little faster and can be more accurate.
How the result looks
The text of each page starts with a line such as "--- Page 1 ---", so you can find where each page begins. If no words are found on any page, the tool tells you instead of giving an empty file.
How it works
Each page is drawn as a sharp picture and read by the Tesseract OCR engine inside your browser. The first time, the language data, about 3 MB for English and 1.4 MB for Hindi, is downloaded from PDFPixo once and kept by your browser. Long PDFs take time, roughly a few seconds per page, and longer on phones; keep the page open until it finishes.
Accuracy
OCR can make mistakes, especially with faint scans, handwriting, stamps over text, tables and unusual fonts. Always read the result and correct it before using it in an official document. A clean, straight scan gives the best results; the scan to PDF tool can help make better scans from phone photos.
PDF with real text?
If you can already select text in the PDF, use the extract text tool instead; it is much faster and has no OCR mistakes. To edit the words afterwards, paste the text into Word or use the PDF to Word tool on a text PDF.
Common uses
Copy a paragraph from a scanned book, collect details from an old certificate, search the words of court or land papers, reuse text from a scanned notice, or make notes from a scanned study material.
Making the text editable
Copy the result into Word, Google Docs or a notes app to edit it. Remove the page marker lines if you do not need them. For a document you will submit, compare the text with the original scan line by line, especially names, numbers and dates.
Only some pages?
The tool reads every page in order. If you need only a few pages from a long scan, take them out first with the split tool, then read that smaller PDF here. It finishes much faster.
Private by design
Your file is processed inside your own browser. It is never uploaded to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
