Permanently remove parts of a PDF
Redaction means removing information from a document so it can never be read again. This tool lets you select areas of any PDF, such as names, signatures, account numbers, salaries, addresses or confidential lines, and creates a new PDF in which those areas are solid black and the content beneath them is gone.
Why a black box is not enough
If you draw a black rectangle in an ordinary PDF editor, the text is often still there underneath. Anyone can select and copy it, or remove the rectangle. This tool rebuilds every page as a picture with the black areas burnt in, so there is no hidden text left to copy, search or recover.
Selecting the areas
Drag on the page preview to draw a box over each part you want removed. You can mark several areas on different pages. Make the boxes a little larger than the text. The count of selected areas is shown, and you can clear them and start again.
What changes in the file
Because every page becomes a picture, text can no longer be selected or searched, links and form fields are removed, and the file may become larger. This is the price of safe redaction. If you need a searchable copy afterwards, use the Read scanned PDF text tool on the result and check it.
Redact, then protect
After redaction, you can also remove the hidden document details with the remove metadata tool, and lock the file with a password if it will be emailed.
Check before sharing
Open the redacted PDF, zoom in on every black area, and try to select text there. Nothing should be selectable. Keep the original, unredacted file safely on your own device.
Common uses
Share a salary slip without the amount, send a contract without other clients' names, publish a document with signatures removed, submit papers with only the needed details, or share school records without phone numbers.
Plan what to remove
Before you start, scroll through the whole PDF and note every page that has private details. Look at headers, footers, tables and signature blocks, because private numbers often appear more than once.
Locked PDFs
If the PDF asks for a password, unlock it first with the remove password tool. XFA forms made by some government software cannot be redacted safely in the browser; the tool tells you if a file is one of these.
Private by design
Your file is processed inside your own browser. It is never uploaded to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. For private documents such as ID cards, this matters more than anything else.
