Number the pages of a PDF

This tool adds page numbers to every page of a PDF. Numbered pages are easier to read, print and discuss, and many offices, colleges and courts ask for numbered documents. It is useful for project reports, assignments, theses, legal papers, tender documents and any long PDF you merged from several files.

Choose the style

Pick how the number looks: "Page 1 of 10", "1 / 10", a plain "1", or "- 1 -". The total page count is filled in automatically. Choose the position at the bottom or top of the page, on the left, in the centre or on the right, and set the font size so the number is clear without being distracting.

After merging

If you combine several PDFs into one, add page numbers last so the numbering runs through the whole document. If you later remove or reorder pages, number the final file again.

Quality stays the same

Numbers are added on top of the pages; the existing text and pictures are not re-drawn, so text stays selectable and the file size hardly changes.

Need more than a number?

To add a document title, your name or a date to every page along with the number, use the header and footer tool, which supports placeholders like the page number, total pages and date.

Common uses

Students number project files and dissertations before binding. Lawyers number petitions and annexures. Contractors number tender documents so every page can be referred to. Anyone who merges several PDFs into one can number the final file so nothing gets missed.

Choosing a size

A font size of 9 to 11 suits most A4 documents. Larger sizes are useful for presentations shown on a screen. If the bottom of your pages already has text, such as a footer, choose a top position instead so the number does not overlap. Numbers are drawn in a soft grey colour, which is clear on white pages without looking heavy when the document is printed.

Hindi documents

In the Hindi version of the site, the "Page 1 of 10" style is written in Hindi as पेज 1 / 10. The plain, slash and dash styles use only numbers and work for any language.

Number last

Add page numbers as the final step, after merging, removing and reordering pages. If you number first and then change the pages, the printed numbers will no longer match. For files with a size limit, compress after adding numbers.

Your PDF is processed inside your own browser. It is never uploaded to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
