Read text from image
Recognize English or Hindi text in a photo or scan.
Also called: image to text, photo to text.
Turn printed text in a photo or screenshot into text you can copy and edit. Supports English and Hindi.
Read text from a photo
This tool reads the words in a photo or screenshot and turns them into text you can copy, edit or search. This is called OCR, optical character recognition. It saves typing when you need the words from a notice, a book page, a visiting card, a receipt, a whiteboard or a screenshot.
Languages
Choose English, Hindi, or English and Hindi together. The combined option suits most Indian documents that mix both, such as forms and notices. Choose a single language when the photo has only that language, which is a little faster and can be more accurate.
How it works
The OCR engine, Tesseract, runs inside your browser. The first time you use it, the language data, about 3 MB for English and 1.4 MB for Hindi, is downloaded from PDFPixo once and kept by your browser. Your photo is never uploaded.
Getting accurate text
OCR works best on a clear, straight, well-lit photo where the letters are large enough to read easily. Avoid shadows, blur and tilted pages. Printed text gives much better results than handwriting, and very decorative fonts may be misread. Always read the result and correct mistakes before using it.
Improve the photo first
If the photo is dark or soft, run it through the enhance tool first, or crop it to the text area with the photo editor. A sharper, cleaner picture gives fewer mistakes.
PDF instead of photo?
For scanned PDFs with many pages, use the Read scanned PDF text tool, which reads every page in one go.
Common uses
Copy the text of a notice or circular, turn a book page into notes, save details from a visiting card, read a screenshot that cannot be copied, or type out a printed letter without retyping.
Taking a photo for OCR
Hold the phone straight above the paper, fill the screen with the text, and use daylight rather than the flash. Tap the screen to focus before taking the photo. A screenshot is already sharp, so it usually gives very accurate text. For a page with two columns, crop each column separately for the best order of lines.
Formats
JPG, PNG and WebP photos and screenshots work well. If you have an iPhone HEIC photo, convert it to JPG first with the image converter.
After reading
Copy the text into a message, a note or a document. Check names, numbers and dates carefully, because a single wrong digit can matter. Mixed English and Hindi lines may need small fixes.
Private by design
Your file is processed inside your own browser. It is never uploaded to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
