PDF to Word

Turn a PDF into an editable Word (DOCX) file.

Also called: PDF to DOC, PDF to Word converter.

Convert a PDF with selectable text into a Word file you can edit. Pictures and complex tables are not copied. For a scanned PDF, use "Read scanned PDF text" first.

Turn a PDF into an editable Word file

This tool converts a PDF into a Word document in .docx format, so you can change the text in Word, WPS Office or Google Docs. It is useful when you received a letter, a form, a resume or notes as PDF and need to edit, reuse or update the words.

What is kept

The text of every page is copied with its line and paragraph breaks. Large text becomes headings, centred lines stay centred, and each PDF page starts on a new page in Word with the same page size. Simple tables that are lined up with spaces become text separated by tabs, which you can turn back into a table in Word.

What is not kept

Pictures, table borders, multiple columns and the exact fonts are not kept, and the layout may change. The result is a clean starting point for editing, not a copy that looks exactly like the PDF. Check the document and fix the layout where needed.

Scanned PDFs

A scanned PDF contains pictures of pages, not real text, so this tool finds nothing to copy and tells you so. First use the Read scanned PDF text tool, which reads the words with OCR, then paste the text into Word.

Small changes only?

If you only need to fix a few words and keep the exact look of the PDF, use PDF Studio, which edits text directly inside the PDF.

Common uses

Update an old resume that you only have as PDF, reuse text from a report or notice, edit a letter format received from an office, or correct notes before printing them again.

Tips after converting

Open the .docx and use Word's styles to tidy headings. Where a table has become text with tabs, select those lines and use Convert text to table in Word. Add pictures back from the original by taking them out with the extract images tool. Save often while you edit, and when you are done, save as PDF again from Word or use the Word to PDF tool.

Locked PDFs

A PDF that needs a password to open must be unlocked first with the password. A PDF that only blocks copying may still convert, because the text is read directly.

An example

Suppose you have your old resume only as a PDF. Convert it here, open the .docx in Word or Google Docs, update your latest job and phone number, fix the headings, and save it again as PDF. This takes minutes instead of retyping the whole resume.

Private by design

Your file is processed inside your own browser. It is never uploaded to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

How to use it
