Copy all the text from a PDF
This tool takes out all the written text from a PDF and shows it as plain text that you can copy or download as a .txt file. It is the fastest way to reuse words from a PDF in a message, an email, a document or a note, without selecting and copying page by page.
How the text is arranged
Text is taken page by page, with a blank line between pages. Lines are kept where the PDF marks the end of a line. Formatting such as bold, colours, tables and pictures is not copied, only the words.
Copy or download
After extraction the text appears on the page with a Copy text button. You can paste it anywhere, or download it as a .txt file that opens in any notes app or editor.
Scanned PDFs
If the PDF is a scan or a photo of paper, it has no real text inside, and the result will be empty. Use the Read scanned PDF text tool, which reads the words from the page pictures with OCR in English and Hindi.
Hindi and other scripts
Text in Hindi and other languages is copied as it is stored in the PDF. Some older PDFs made with special fonts store Hindi in a way that comes out as jumbled letters; in that case, the Read scanned PDF text tool can often read the page more accurately.
Need editing with layout?
To get an editable document with headings and page breaks, use the PDF to Word tool. To change the text inside the PDF itself, use PDF Studio.
Common uses
Copy a paragraph from an e-book, reuse text from a government notice, collect questions from a sample paper, quote a report in an email, or search the text of a long PDF in a notes app.
Locked PDFs
A PDF that needs a password to open must be unlocked first. PDFs that only block copying in a reader can usually still be read here, because the text is taken directly from the file. Use this only for documents you are allowed to reuse.
Long PDFs
Hundreds of pages are read in order and joined with blank lines. For a very long book, the text may take a few seconds to appear; you can then search it in any notes app.
An example
Suppose a 40-page PDF notice has the paragraph you need on page 23. Extract the text, paste it into a notes app, search for a word from that paragraph, and copy it from there. It is faster than scrolling through the PDF.
Private by design
Your file is processed inside your own browser. It is never uploaded to a server, and nothing is kept after you close the page. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
