Crop PDF
Cut the edges off every page of a PDF.
Trim white borders or unwanted edges from all pages at once. Works with rotated pages too.
Trim the edges of PDF pages
This tool cuts away the outer edges of every page in a PDF. Use it to remove wide white margins from scans, trim the dark border a phone camera leaves around paper, cut off printer marks, or make pages fit better on a phone screen. You set how much to cut from the top, bottom, left and right in millimetres.
Setting the margins
Enter a number for each side. Ten millimetres removes about one centimetre from that edge. Start small, check the result, and increase if needed. The same margins are applied to every page, which suits most scans and documents that share the same layout.
What cropping really does
Cropping changes the visible area of each page. The content outside the new edges is hidden, but it is not deleted from the file and could be recovered with special software. Never use cropping to remove private information; use the redact tool, which rebuilds the page so the hidden content is gone.
Quality stays the same
Text stays selectable and pictures keep their quality, because the pages are not re-drawn. The page size of the new PDF becomes smaller, so it may print slightly differently; choose "fit to page" when printing if needed.
Cropping photos instead
To crop a photo or a single scanned image, use the photo editor, which offers free cropping and fixed shapes such as square or passport ratio.
Common uses
Remove the black table edge around a document photographed on a desk. Cut wide margins from a book scan so the text looks bigger on a phone. Trim printer crop marks from a design proof. Make slides or certificates fill the screen better before sharing.
Finding the right numbers
An A4 page is 210 millimetres wide and 297 millimetres tall, so cutting 10 on each side removes a thin strip. If you cut too much and words disappear, go back to the original file and use smaller numbers; do not crop an already cropped file again and again. A value of 0 leaves that side untouched.
Rotated pages
The sides you type are the sides you see on screen, even when a page is rotated inside the PDF.
Crop before compressing
Cropping does not reduce file size much, because the hidden part stays in the file. If you need a smaller file, crop first and then use the PDF compressor, which rebuilds the pages from what is visible.
